Visual Playground were honoured to be asked to create the visual effect shots as well as the opening titles for “Immigration Nation”, one of SBS’ flagship featured documentaries for 2011.

“Immigration Nation is an ambitious three part series telling the secret history of how modern multicultural Australia was forged against the odds. More than simply a social history of different migrant groups, it is a dramatic political thriller based on interviews with eminent historians and the testimony of eyewitnesses",  said Alex West – Head of Factual, Renegade Films. “This is combined with rarely seen archive, specially shot sequences and cutting edge computer graphics. ”

Under the direction of the Renegade Factual team, Visual Playground was challenged with the task of conceptualising and creating over 50 Effects Shots in under 3 months, for the 3 one-hour episodes.

Visual Playground utilised several high-end techniques, such as 3D matte paintings, live action tracking and 3D photographic projections to realise the client’s brief in creating eye-catching and historically accurate moving visuals from a limited amount of resources. Archive photography and footage was carefully matched with current day shots and seamlessly integrated.

Immigration Nation builds on the strong collaborative efforts of Renegade Factual & Visual Playground, following on from the multi-AFI award winning feature length documentary “Inside the Firestorm”.
